Weekly Update 1/23 – 1/29

Welcome back to The Rock Show, where it’s all about the music.

Rise Against has released the first single from their upcoming album, Endgame, due out on March 15.  I just picked up the single, titled “Help is On the Way,” and listened to it today.  I like it quite a bit, though probably not enough to get the album when it comes out – I’ve never really taken a huge shine to their music, having only three of their songs in my library.  However, fans of modern punk rock or hard rock in general will probably enjoy the new single, so definitely check it out.

Speaking of new albums and release dates, The Strokes have set the release date for their new album, tentatively titled Angles, for March 22.  Now this is an album that I’m certainly going to look into.  I haven’t been keeping up with the band too much recently – I have their first album and a few songs off their second, but that’s it.  Maybe with the release of the new album I’ll take a look into the back catalog and update my inventory.  We’ll see.  Either way, the project sounds promising, especially since we haven’t seen a Strokes album since 2006.  The first single is going to be “Under Cover of Darkness” and should see a release in February.  Can’t wait to hear it!

Despite their upcoming tour celebrating the ten-year anniversary of Second Stage Turbine Blade, Coheed & Cambria have confirmed that they are writing new material for a follow-up to last year’s Year of the Black Rainbow, the album that completed the band’s five-album storyline.  The Amory Wars concept, however, is not over.  Claudio Sanchez, the band’s frontman, has mentioned that the upcoming album might have to do with a character from early on in the story’s timeline.  I’m going to nerd out here for a minute – I’d say that since Year of the Black Rainbow was mostly about Leonard and Pearl Hohenberger, the new album would have to deal with someone that predates them – perhaps Sirius Amory himself?  I don’t know – we’ll have to wait and see what new details emerge.  I suppose we’ll probably get more information after the new tour is over.  Still, I’ll be watching this like a hawk.
